About Bill’s Blog

Q. Why did I start this blog?

A. I’ve been a lifelong cyclist. After retiring from the military, I got a job in a bike shop as a mechanic.  I soon learned that my true calling was everything wheels – building wheels, studying the intricacies of their structure, and sharing with other people like me scientifically-based facts as opposed to just trusting so-called conventional wisdom or what I heard someone else authoritatively state.  I have learned a lot.  As a scientist, I want to make what I have learned known to others.

Q. From where does my knowledge come?

A. It comes from: reading every scientific book or article I find; treating every paper written with respect but not believing everything I read; being constructively skeptical of claims that are not based on solid science; visiting component manufacturers and drawing information from the experts; doing my own experiments to prove things to myself and/or to discover new information; being open to new thoughts; and, becoming involved in a partnership basis with engineers and physicists at the university or high school AP level in the making of my videos. I have also built over 4,000 wheels of every conceivable design and purpose.  I apply an understanding of physics and engineering to every wheel.

Q. What encapsulates your beliefs about bicycle wheels?

A. If something doesn’t square with physics and mathematics, it cannot be true, no matter how passionately people believe in it.

Q. What is the protocol for posting questions or comments?

A. Responders should speak in tones which reflect the knowledge and commitment of other members of the group.
